ADA Compliant Parking Lot Striping: What Houston Businesses Need to Know

5 min read

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has specific requirements for accessible parking spaces. Non-compliance can result in federal fines of $75,000 for a first offense and $150,000 for subsequent violations. Here's what Houston businesses need for compliant parking lot striping.

Required Number of Accessible Spaces

The number of accessible parking spaces depends on your total lot capacity:

  • 1–25 total spaces: 1 accessible space
  • 26–50: 2 accessible spaces
  • 51–75: 3 accessible spaces
  • 76–100: 4 accessible spaces
  • 101–150: 5 accessible spaces

Stall Dimensions

Standard accessible stalls must be at least 8 feet wide with a 5-foot access aisle. Van-accessible stalls require 8 feet wide with an 8-foot access aisle (or 11-foot stall with 5-foot aisle).

Additional Requirements

  • Blue International Symbol of Accessibility painted on the stall
  • Blue diagonal lines in access aisles
  • "NO PARKING" stenciled in access aisles
  • Vertical signage mounted 60 inches minimum height
  • Closest proximity to accessible building entrance

GreaseKleen ensures all accessible stalls meet current ADA standards. We can also audit your existing lot for compliance. Get a compliance assessment.
